 Remus is introduced in the movie in Ron, Hermione and Harry's train car. He is asleep, and the trio leave him be until the Dementors arrive. A fast thinking Remus wakes and sends the Dementors off with a Patronus before giving Harry some chocolate to help him feel better after the Dementor attack.

 During the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, Professor Lupin teaches the students about Boggarts and how to repel them. When Harry steps forward for his turn, Remus steps in without explanation to repel the Boggart (believing Harry's Boggart to be Voldemort). A silvery orb appears in front of Remus and he easily destroys the Boggart before dismissing the class.

 While the students are away at Hogsmeade, Harry and Remus share a talk about Harry's parents and Harry discovers Remus was close friends with James and Lily.

 After mysteriously taking a few days away from teaching, Professor Lupin returns, with a cane and several scratches. Harry asks Lupin to help him learn how to repel Dementors. Lupin agrees to help Harry - after the holidays.

 During their first session, Remus helps Harry develop his skills against Dementors by teaching him the Expecto Patronum spell.

 Remus covers for Harry who is caught by Snape after hours wandering the halls of Hogwarts. Afterward, he scolds Harry for risking his safety while Sirius Black is loose. Harry turns over the Marauders Map to Remus and claims that he saw Peter Pettigrew on the map, who is thought to be dead. Remus assures him it's not possible.

 Remus follows the trio into the Whomping Willow and stops Harry from killing Sirius Black.

 Sirius and Lupin shock the trio by embracing and Hermione, Ron and Harry mistakenly believe that Remus is Sirius's co-hort, out to hurt Harry. Hermione reveals Remus is a werewolf, a claim Remus confirms.

 While Remus is trying to calm Harry to explain the situation, Severus Snape arrives and tells Sirius he is going to take him to Hogwarts himself and turn him in. Remus tries to reason with Snape, unsuccessfully, forcing Harry to disarm Snape and knock him unconscious.

 Remus and Sirius explain to Harry, Hermione and Ron that Sirius was innocent of the crimes against him, and that Ron's rat, Scabbers, was indeed responsible for James and Lily's deaths. They manage to turn Scabbers into his true form, Peter Pettigrew.

 While taking Peter to Hogwarts to turn him in and clear Sirius's name, Remus realizes it's the full moon. Before he can react, he begins to transform into a werewolf. Sirius tries to calm him, but it's too late, and Remus fights Padfoot before going after Harry and the others.

 As a wolf, Remus is distracted before he can attack Snape and the trio and runs off into the woods. We find later that it was Harry and Hermione (ala the Time Turner) saving themselves from Remus. Buckbeak saves Harry and Hermione from Lupin and they manage to get away.

 After Sirius escapes and Pettigrew returns to Voldemort, the end of the school year arrives. Remus, outed as a werewolf by Snape, resigns from his post at Hogwarts. As he is no longer Harry's Professor, he has no qualms about returning the Marauders Map to Harry.
